The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai has said security gaps and lack of decisive action by state authorities and security agencies enabled the killing of late Major General Idris Alkali in Plateau State.
Buratai spoke yesterday at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Army in Abuja, when Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong paid him a condolence visit over the death ofAlkalii.
“It has taken us too long to realize this unfortunate situation, that authorities who are supposed to take care of the security of their people and other persons in that area have reneged on their responsibilities.
“This is one of the outcomes of such irresponsible conduct by certain individuals over the years, it’s good that it has been realized and appropriate steps would be taken to remedy it in the future,” he said.
Buratai added that, “It has been at a very heavy cost, not only the case of Major General Alkali but others have gone the same way, without being reported or even those that were reported were never conclusively investigated and those involved properly prosecuted.
“This assured a very big gap in our responsibilities at the various segment of security agencies, it’s a gap that has been created unfortunately.”
He noted that discoveries from the Dura-Du pond showed that one of the vehicles recovered was dumped in 2013.
He said investigation into the case was inconclusive, no action was taken, and the case was closed.
He said, “That is to show that almost all the security agencies in the state know what was happening in that community and nobody bothered to take decisive action.”
“If we are not decisive, if we don’t take actions on such things the consequences are always grave, and we would always be the victim,” he said.
He noted that the incident with Major General Alkali should be a wakeup call to all the security agencies, including the military.
He said every criminality across the country must be openly condemned and promptly, noting that silence by leaders signifies consent to the action of the youth.
Buratai urged the governor to ensure diligent and speedy conclusion of the prosecution of suspects arrested over the death of General Alkali which is now in a court in Plateau State.
Earlier, Governor Lalong condoled with Buratai over the death of Alkali and expressed gratitude for the arrest of the culprits.
He said, “These are some of the things Mr. President inherited, we also inherited some of these things, but you have done your best in the armed forces to restore peace in Plateau State,” Lalong said, even as he appealed to the army not to get discouraged with what happened.
General Alkali went missing on September 3 while traveling from Abuja to Bauchi via Jos. On September 22 the Army started a search after his family could not ascertain his where-about.
Alkali’s vehicle with registration number Kwara MUN 670 AA was recovered from an old mining pond in Dura-Du on September 29.
The remains of late Maj.-Gen. Idris Alkali, which was found by a team of Nigerian Army on Search and Rescue Operation, was buried at Gudu Cemetery in Abuja on Saturday.
