Prince Charles has called for collective action against the dangers posed by Climate Change, which is already being felt by the avalanche of hurricanes and cyclones.
He spoke in a keynote address with the theme “Towards a Common Future” at the Accra International Conference Centre yesterday.
“There is it seems to me, tremendous potential for the Commonwealth to share best practice and coordinate its response to these kinds of disasters,” he said.
Still on the environment, Prince Charles campaigned for the preservation of the blue economy, as he brought to the fore the adverse impact of disposing plastics in the ocean.
“Eight million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year that soon it will be a tonne of plastic for every three tonnes of fish in the sea and that the dead zones in the oceans now numbering about four are continuing to grow.
“Surely we must find a way to protect and conserve our oceans and develop a truly sustainable secure approach to the Blue economy as we must to the rest of our economic activity,” he said.
The event, which was attended by President Nana Akufo Addo and three former heads of State, Jerry John Rawlings, John Kufuor and John Mahama also featured an exhibition, showcasing projects the United kingdom had supported Ghana to execute and some on-going projects.
The Prince of Wales and his wife, Princess Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall are expected in Nigeria today.
